Mabel meets mom at greyhound reunion
August 3, 2007 - The Hillsboro Argus.

Mabel is reunited with her mom, Parkie
Mabel is reunited with her mom, Parkie

Hold on to your knickers, friends, as Giving the Heart Paws just might give you pause… to ponder a mother’s love. Do boundaries and distance ever diminish it – and do other species really color in that much paler of a shade of what we, as humans, know as a mothers’ love – or a child’s memory?

In February my column encouraged you to change your life by adopting or fostering a greyhound / retired racer. I wanted you to know I took my own advice. My husband Herb and I adopted Mabel, and it was one of the best choices we’ve ever made.

While I’ve loved every animal that’s been part of my life, I have to say there’s been a special "something" about Mabel that’s, well – and I don’t want to lose anyone here – but so sensitive it’s almost spiritual or intuitive. Her quiet grace draws people to her. On walks in the park, moms ask if their wee ones can pet her, kidlets in strollers reach out to her, and toddlers say "I wanna kiss Mabel." And she kisses them back – very softly.

This Mabel adventure has also opened a whole new world of people to meet. Her adoption packet from GPA Northwest included an order form for Greyt Outdoors, an off-the-chart cool source of custom made coats for greyhounds. New friend Karen Embler took our order – and put some magic in motion.

BECAUSE, Karen had a message on file – if an order come in from someone adopting Mabel, she was to offer to put them in touch with Carolyn Reeves.

Why? Because just a few months earlier, Carolyn had adopted Mabel’s mother.

Mother and daughter were reunited last month – I wish all of you had been there.

When "the girls" met face to face for the first time – they just about peed their panties! There were doggie kisses, tails wagging, it was old home week. After play time with lots of room to run (and Mama Parkie turned it up a notch, still showing daughter how it’s done) we went to visit a neighborhood pet store.

Stopping for pictures at a little sidewalk park, you could hear passersby saying things like "have you ever seen anything SO cute?" because Mabes and Parkie would stand with their faces cheek to cheek, or Mabel would rest her chin on Mom’s head.

A couple of weeks later, I couldn’t stand it – I called Lisa Reber (pet communicator) to ask her what Mabel thought of the whole experience. The whole reading won’t fit, but you guys are going to love this. I only told Lisa that Mabel met her mother Parkie, and I sent along pictures.

Mabel told Lisa:

"Hello!!! It was so wonderful and sad to see mother again - sad because we've missed each other and didn't know what had happened to each other and all that longing came rushing up! Wonderful that we could see, touch, know that the other is doing good - she has such a peaceful life now, I told her all about my home and people. I told her about all the other animals I live with. She can't imagine living with so many animals that aren't dogs!
Thank you Mommy for letting me see Mother again - my heart feels better."

Then Lisa wrote: (I got a sense of anxiety being lifted - Lisa).

When Mabel said her mother couldn’t imagine living with so many animals that aren’t dogs – well, Lisa didn’t know, Parkie has a very high "prey drive" and it would be impossible for her to live peacefully with my menagerie.

SO… take this column for what it’s worth. On the one hand, I’m warmed through and through by the knowledge that Parkie, now 11, and Mabel, now 5, still know each other. On the other hand, my resolve to love all my companion animals – and to encourage everyone else to – is even deeper, because it’s crystal clear, we step in and take the place of their family ties.

It’s our duty – and our lifetime promise and pleasure – to be that family.
